History

Emrich has a rich history beginning in 1947.

Emrich in the early years.

The land that Emrich now encompasses was first a pony farm. In 1947, with the help and support of Bishop Richard S. Emrich, the land that was once the Teahen Pony Farm was purchased by the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan and became a place called Parishfield. Parishfield was a religious community whose purpose was to "serve as a center for renewal of the Church" and to work for "the strengthening of the laity." Parishfield disbanded in the late 1960's. Since then the Emrich Center has served as a retreat center for churches and organizations of many religious affiliations as well as for non-profit and educational groups.

Bishop Richard Emrich

"In the administration of this large Diocese,
a Bishop has all too little time for deep fellowship with
the clergy and laity. It seems perfectly clear that
such fellowship, built on prayer, study and work together,
cannot exist unless we have a spot set aside for this purpose. "

The Rt. Rev. Richard Emrich, 1949
